Company Also Surpasses Milestone of Two Million Man Hours Worked Without a Lost Time Incident

LOUISVILLE, KY (May 4, 2012) – Charah®, Inc., a leading provider of coal combustion product management and power plant support services for the coal-fired electric utility industry, has received a prestigious award for an outstanding record of employee safety from the North Carolina Department of Labor (NCDOL).

Charah’s landfill construction, operations and management project, located at Progress Energy Carolinas’ Roxboro Power Plant in Roxboro, North Carolina, received a Certificate of Safety Achievement on April 17, 2012. The company’s Gold-level Certificate of Safety Achievement, the state’s highest safety award, was presented by North Carolina Commissioner of Labor Cherie Berry in recognition of Charah’s outstanding safety and health efforts and the promotion of safe working conditions in 2011.

This annual awards program, run by the NCDOL, recognizes companies that strive to excel in safety. Each year the state awards more than 1,500 certificates to companies around the state. In order to qualify for the Gold award, each company must have ten or more full time employees, had no lost time accidents and also achieved incident rates 50% below their SIC code.

Marvin Bradsher accepted the award on behalf of Charah. A presentation to Roxboro site personnel was held on April 23, 2012 during Charah’s daily morning safety briefing.

Also in April 2012, Charah reached a new company milestone with two million man hours worked without a loss time incident. This significant achievement is a result of the commitment of all Charah personnel to put safety first in their work activities.
“We are honored to receive this award from the North Carolina Department of Labor in recognition of our commitment to safety and also to achieve this important safety milestone,” added Charles Price, President and CEO of Charah. “Safety is our foremost priority and we are always exploring new ways to improve our worksites and our employees’ attention to safety. I commend the Safety Department, Site Manager Justin Mize, our North Carolina site employees and all of Charah’s employees for making safety their top priority.”
Earlier in April, Charah received another award for employee safety, given by the United Stated Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as part of the Sentinels of Safety Program. Charah’s Limestone Grinding Facility located at Brickey’s Quarry in Bloomsdale, Missouri received the Certificate of Achievement in Safety for working nearly 5,800 man-hours without a lost workday injury in 2010.

LOUISVILLE, KY (April 24, 2012) – Charah®, Inc., a leading provider of coal combustion product management and power plant support services for the coal-fired electric utility industry, has received a prestigious award for an outstanding record of employee safety from the United States Department of Labor.

Charah’s Limestone Grinding Facility located at Brickey’s Quarry in Bloomsdale, Missouri received a Certificate of Achievement in Safety on April 10, 2012. The Certificate of Achievement in Safety is presented by the United States Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as part of the Sentinels of Safety Program. The Sentinels of Safety Awards, sponsored by National Mining Association (NMA), were initiated in 1925 and remain the nation’s most prestigious awards recognizing mine safety. They are awarded annually to the nation’s safest mines with a minimum of 4,000 injury-free hours. Charah’s award was presented under the category of Small Metal Non Metal Mill Group and the company was recognized for working nearly 5,800 man-hours without a lost workday injury in 2010.

“We are honored to receive this award from the Department of Labor in recognition of our commitment to safety,” said Charles Price, President and CEO of Charah. “At Charah, safety is our foremost priority and we are always exploring new ways to analyze and improve our worksites and our employees’ attention to safety. I commend the Safety Department, Site Manager Dave Grimwood, and all the site employees for making safety Charah’s top priority.”

At Charah’s Limestone Grinding facility, as well as the company’s other sites, each crew member participates in three daily safety briefings, in Monday morning safety talks, and in monthly safety training sessions. Tasks are preplanned and potential hazards identified and alleviated. Hazards, when identified, are addressed quickly and effectively. Each crew member also has been crossed trained and educated in all phases of plant operations. This allows different perspectives to be shared, from which many excellent suggestions have been implemented to improve safety and operations.

Earlier this year, Charah received another award for employee safety from Westfield Insurance, one of the nation’s 50 largest property and casualty insurance groups with more than 164 years of experience in the insurance business. The previous award is reserved for a select group of commercial customers who excel in management of their employee safety practices.

LOUISVILLE, KY (January 17, 2012) – The new corporate headquarters of Charah®, Inc., a leading ash management provider for the coal-fired electric utility industry, was ranked as the 9th largest LEED-certified buildings in Greater Louisville by Business First of Louisville. Charah was recognized in the January 6, 2012 print edition of Business First.

Located in Blankenbaker Station in eastern Jefferson County at 12601 Plantside Drive, the innovative commercial office space has 19,903 square feet and was completed in June 2010. The facility’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification level is LEED NC 2.2 and certification was issued on November 2, 2011.

Founded in 1987, Charah is a company committed to coal combustion products (CCP) management and power plant support services. It was only fitting that when Charah planned for design and construction of its new headquarters, the facility maximized the use of CCPs in its construction allowing Charah to meet LEED program requirements.

“It was very important for Charah to build a LEED-certified facility which beneficially used fly ash and other recycled products,” said Charles Price, president and CEO of Charah. “Since we actively develop markets for the beneficial use of CCPs, we know first-hand how CCPs can improve the quality of many building materials while creating both cost and environmental benefits. Utilizing fly ash in concrete and other products, bottom ash in concrete masonry block and gypsum in wallboard not only eliminates the need to dispose of CCPs in landfills but also conserves our natural resources by substituting for materials that would typically require mining and energy intensive manufacturing. We get a better quality building product and the environment benefits.”

This new headquarters is just another example of Charah’s long-standing commitment to the beneficial use of CCPs and finding innovative solutions that are environmentally conscious. Charah is a charter member of the EPA’s Coal Combustion Products Partnership (C2P2) which encourages beneficial use of CCPs. The company has already been recognized for other innovative initiatives. In April 2005, Charah was awarded the C2P2 first place award for “Innovation” by the EPA for its outstanding achievements in increasing the amount of CCPs beneficially used in its patent-pending, bottom ash-based packaged concrete mixes sold in select Home Depot store locations. In July 2008, Charah received its second C2P2 award, this one for “Partnership” recognizing its unique concrete packaging facility at AmerenUE’s Labadie Plant in Missouri.
