SITUATION
Concrete products producers demand the quality and availability that fly ash brings to every project, with all the advantages of added strength, durability, increased workability and improved finish product quality.
When the Brayton Point Power Plant in Somerset, MA was retired in 2017, just as the economic recovery was in full swing, the New England market was left in need of a reliable source of quality fly ash.
SOLUTION
To meet the growing demand for fly ash in the Northeastern U.S., Charah Solutions initially broadened its MultiSource® materials network with a transload terminal in Worcester, MA. As a demonstration of its commitment to the Northeast region, Charah Solutions expanded its supply and distribution capacity through the addition of the Hopedale, MA rail terminal in early 2019, anticipating the needs of regional concrete products producers.
Charah Solutions’ MultiSource materials network is a unique distribution system of multiple sourcing locations across the country, which ensures a steady and reliable supply of Class C and Class F fly ash for concrete products producers and other Charah Solutions customers. The MultiSource materials network not only provides the fly ash in markets where it is needed, it also mitigates the need to landfill the fly ash that could otherwise be used by builders.
RESULTS
Located in centrally-accessible Hopedale, MA near the I-495 transportation corridor, concrete products producers in the Greater New England Area were able to access almost 30,000 tons of quality fly ash through the rail terminal and an additional 15,000 tons were railed directly to customers from the Dynegy Miami Fort Power Plant in Ohio. The installation of two silos also provided fly ash storage and distribution flexibility to help serve customers in the New England region with direct access to customers in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire.
