Charah Wins AGC/Willis Construction Safety Excellence Award

LOUISVILLE, KY (March 30, 2015) – Charah®, Inc., a total solutions company providing unparalleled service and innovation for the coal-fired electric utility industry, was selected as the 2014 First Place winner in its category for exceptional leadership in safety as part of the 16th Annual Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) / Willis Construction Safety Excellence Awards. Charah competed in the Specialty Contractor Division’s 700,000 to 1 Million Work Hour Category. The award winners were announced as part of AGC’s 96th Annual Convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico during the AGC/Willis Safety Awards Breakfast on March 19, 2015.

charahmarch2015“The most important thing any construction firm can build is its safety culture,” said Al Landes, the association’s past president and president and COO of St. Joseph, Mo.-based Herzog Contracting Corp. “Charah presented outstanding guidance in safety and occupation health management, risk control, safety training, work site hazard identification and control, and safety program innovation. Firms like this send a clear message to their industry peers that we can never take the health and safety of our workers for granted.”

The AGC Construction Safety Excellence Awards (CSEA) is an ongoing and evolving effort by AGC to recognize companies who have developed and implemented excellent safety and loss prevention programs achieved through management commitment, employee involvement, and program innovation. The finalists in each category, including Charah’s Director of Safety, David Valentine and his team, presented details of their safety programs and provided oral presentations to a panel of five independent safety professionals within the government, corporate and insurance industries. Awards were distributed for a number of categories, based on the size of the company, the amount of work performed and the type of work performed.

According to the AGC, the purpose of the CSEA is to recognize those construction companies who excel at safety performance. CSEA closely examines each candidate’s commitment to safety and occupational health management and risk control. Unlike the National AGC Safety Awards (NASA) program that limits the criteria to frequency rates, the CSEA selection process is considerably more comprehensive. Judges look for evidence of company management commitment, active employee participation, safety training, work site hazard identification and control, and safety program innovation.
“We are honored to receive this prestigious award from the AGC in recognition of our uncompromising commitment to safety,” said Charles Price, President and CEO of Charah. “Safety is our foremost priority and we are very proud of David Valentine and his team for the work they do every single day to keep our workplaces and employees safe.”
